WHAT IS A HORMONAL IMBALANCE?

Hormones are chemical “messengers” that impact the way your cells and organs function. Your hormone levels shift at different times of your life, such as pregnancy, before or after your period, perimenopause, menopause, with medication use, or even as a result from a medical condition. Produced by glands in the endocrine system, imbalances occur when there is too little or too much of a certain hormone in the bloodstream. Because hormones regulate such a multitude of processes in the body, it comes as no surprise that even the slightest imbalance can cause a substantial effect on one’s overall health and wellbeing.

WHAT IS CORTISOL?

Is a stress- hormone that is produced in the morning, allowing us the energy to get out of bed. If our levels go too high or low, then our well-being can become compromised. It has three goals in keeping us alive- increasing blood sugar, stabilizing blood pressure, and neutralizing inflammation. It also works in conjunction with adrenalin as our ‘flight-fight’ response. Long term stress can increase cortisol, throwing us off balance and wreaking havoc on our body, mind, and spirit. Changing hormone levels can affect cortisol levels, while high cortisol levels can also cause adrenal fatigue and ‘burn out’.
